I'm glad the full version was uploaded. I had seen bits and pieces but never the full video. I directed Assassins last summer and I think it is one of Sondheim's best works. Not only a classic of musical theatre but a classic of the stage and literature of all time. A show that unfortunately will always be timeless.

Great conversation! Unfortunately this must have been recorded before "Something Just Broke" was added in 1992. I'm one of that generation who, to this day, says, "I can remember exactly where I was..." so that song is exceptionally meaningful.

for as much as this is watered down this aged pretty well

earlier this month i played little red in my school’s production of into the woods, and i think the part i miss the most about it is the music. there’s so much depth to it, and something about hearing sondheim himself explaining it to me is really touching

I saw the London production of 1776 when I was there in 1970. I saw the movie version two years later. in 1998 I saw the revival on Broadway with Brent Spiner. My wife and I had only been married a few years when I introduced her to the movie, and a year later we saw a production at Goodspeed Opera House in Haddam, CT. They were all great. We play the DVD every year on July 4th.

my middle school did this show, i was Katt and it was honestly such a blast. the wackiness of the characters and eccentric acting that was allowed made it a such a memorable experience

It's easy to whine about how the school version "ruins" the show, but remember that this version exposes many more people to the show who otherwise wouldn't be, and I'm sure a lot of those people would then seek out and enjoy the original version as well. So I'm all for it.

this was so cool to see onstage

1776 is one of my favorite musicals, but I've seen only one live production of it. That was Tabard Theatre Company's production (in San Jose, CA) with an all-female cast back in 2014. At first, it was a little weird hearing a woman deliver some of Ben Franklin's more bawdy lines, and seeing an obviously pregnant Thomas Jefferson. But by intermission, all that faded away and we were completely engaged in the story.

Wish this came to broadway

Saw him in I AM MY OWN WIFE. Just brilliant! I also once saw an actor come onstage wearing a trench coat with the hanger still attached to the coat’s belt in the back. Costume mistakes happen!

I was and still am so attracted to his genius...he has made many a day brighter...

We love, love this often forgotten musical. My childhood was filled with many powerful moments with my family and I singing along with the CD. I would listen/sing to this soundtrack while driving, and be so emotionally moved that by the time I reached my destination, I had to take a few moments to breathe, compose myself again before even exiting the car. :-D
